This not from his entire lecture:
According to Mr. Harries in his lecture on Jesus in Art; early depictions of our savior found in the roman catacombs was that of a wonder worker. (At the 0:41 second mark) Magic played a major role in society until the 1600’s, at the one minute and three second mark. So the early Christian church wanted to supplant what the magicians were doing by emphasizing Christ miracles over magic itself. Jesus was also depicted as a teacher in the catacombs as well. (02:12 min mark) In the fourth century [301-401AD] period, when people would build sarcophagi for their friend’s one of these images was Christ without a beard being brought before Pilate. (02:40min. mark) Arian churches depicted Jesus without a beard in the fourth century and the more orthodox worship halls depicted Christ with a beard on. However when the orthodox leaders took over those places they left those images alone. (010:20-31 min. mark) Possible discrepancy in why Christ was sometimes with or without a beard could be a trend found in the fourth century starting with Constantine who had no beard while ruling. However since Jewish rabbi’s did have beards at the time. What was certain him with or without beard was not left in the hands of the artist. (011:00 to 012:00 minute mark) By the 500’s Christ was depicted with a beard became the only trademark that is consistent to this day. Eusebius wrote in his book on church history a letter sent by king Agmar sent to Christ. Later a painting was done depicting this king holding a towel with Jesus face on it as if he was healing Agmar himself. Until 1914 orthodox soldiers carried a similar image of his face and what it appears to be a towel in background of the center where Christ face is to be found. (014:06min. mark); Here in the west a woman named veronica who was supposed to wipe Christ face while he was carrying cross with some sort of cloth. There is an image her in background holding onto a large piece of cloth with Jesus face on it. (014:29min. mark) First copies are found in the 14th century.

(027:11min. mark) Sculpture work called Nicodemius by the same artist who depicts himself holding on to Christ. (027:41min. mark); During the height of the counter-reformation (17th century) there was a greater emphasis of drama and the use of the light and dark colors. An artist called El Greco was painting during this time period (028:57min. mark); One such artwork was called cleansing out the temple. (029:20min. mark) Rembrandt who began using baroque style painting towards the end used a more personal style form artwork. A pencil drawing called the 100 guilders was based on Matthew 19.
